Sophia Becker on the Expert Council for Climate Protection in Mobility (EKM)
Der Expertenbeirat Klimaschutz in the field of mobility during the 20th legislative period. At the meeting on June 14, an intensive exchange took place with Federal Minister Dr. Wissing, which resulted in suggestions for further work on climate protection in transport, especially with regard to acceptance, behavior, communication and quality of life. Social science research can make an important contribution to solving current challenges here.
"In view of the major challenge of climate protection, the German government has committed to achieving climate protection targets at international and European level. National greenhouse gas reduction targets have been set by law for all sectors. In the transport sector, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced to around 85 million tons of CO2 by 2030. In order to achieve this target, a common path towards climate-friendly, sustainable and affordable mobility for all and a sustainable transformation of technologies, the economy and society are needed. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) has set up the Expert Advisory Council on Climate Protection in Mobility (EKM) to evaluate climate protection measures. The expert advisory board consists of 20 membersappointed by the BMDV for the 20th legislative period.
The Expert Advisory Council on Climate Protection in Mobility is intended to develop target- and addressee-oriented recommendations for action for politicians, the economy and society. To this end, the Expert Advisory Council supports the implementation of climate protection across all modes of transport and acts as an early warning system for climate policy tasks in the transport sector ("climate policy radar").
The inaugural meeting of the Expert Advisory Council on Climate Protection in Mobility took place on July 8, 2022. At its constituent meeting, the Expert Advisory Board identified key topics to be addressed in the coming months. These are
- Greenhouse gas reduction effect
- Acceptance
- Digitization potential
The work of the expert advisory board is based on the Federal Climate Protection Act, the results of the National Platform Future of Mobility (NPM) and climate protection measures that have already been adopted.
It is co-chaired by Franz Loogen and Prof. Dr. Meike Jipp. The members of the Expert Advisory Board were appointed in a personal capacity and their work is pro bono. The expert advisory board is supported by a scientific consortium.
The Expert Advisory Council on Climate Protection in the Mobility Expert group on the transformation of the automotive industry a sister committee at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.
